The Rev. Fred Phelps, founder of Westboro Baptist in Kansas, contends that American soldiers are being killed in Iraq as vengeance from God for protecting a country that harbors gays. The church, which is not affiliated with a larger denomination, is made up mostly of Phelps' children, grandchildren and in-laws.These are the same people that were here earlier this year to lend David Parker support in his fight to dictate school teachings. Parker tried to distance himself from these supporters but hey, they both want the same thing, elimination of gay and lesbian rights.

Right you are!
Parker isn't the only one trying to distance himself. In his case, the smell will remain as the various hate groups publicly support him. He can't wash them off his soles...or his soul.
So now, the question arises more about when the fundies will have overplayed their hand. With a self-identified born-again president, they've had a lot of slack. Lately though, many of them are looking a lot more like Phelps and a lot less like rational folk.
More Americans surely have to become aware that here, in Maine and elsewhere, they are letting their hate and raw emotion run them. When their hate and fear of homosexuals becomes a cry to strip people of rights -- anti-discrimination, marriage and so forth -- that can't play well for long.
I can't wait for the tipping point.
