Cheers Elton & David!

Elton John and David Furnish were one of many of the hundreds of same sex couples that received legalized civil unions in Great Britain yesterday. They tied the knot in the same hall that Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles wed in April. They sealed their union with a kiss, how romantic! Even though it's not a "marriage" like same sex couples can get in Massachusetts, these couples will be able to receive all the federal benefits of married unlike Massachusetts couples.
Prime Minister Tony Blair speaking to reporters at a news conference, congratulated the couple for exercising their newfound legal right.
Can you imagine, the head of a civilized country congratulates a same sex couple for making a lifetime commitment together, surely the world is going to end!

The few who attended included John's mother, Sheila, and stepfather Fred, and Furnish's parents, Gladys and Jack.

The ceremony, which took less than an hour, was conducted by registrar Clair Williams, who also presided over the union between Charles and Camilla.

One of the guests, art dealer Jay Jopling, described the union as being "like any other couple getting married."

The couple emerged to a shower of rice and the click of cameras, walking arm in arm to face the paparazzi. John lifted his hand to show off a whopping diamond ring.

Love is such a bad bad thing isn't it?
