Is the Christian Right Driving Gays to Drink?

The Family Research Institute, via the Christian Communication Network (CCN) is "reporting" that gays and lesbians are twice as apt to drive under the influence, hence, more auto accidents:
"Driving is a serious responsibility," said Dr. Paul Cameron, Chairman of the Colorado-based Family Research Institute, who just published the report in the peer-reviewed journal Psychological Reports. "Everybody on the road, not just the driver, is endangered by this self-centered and caviler behavior. This is further evidence that gays' devil-may-care attitude toward sex spills into other areas as well. As Shakespeare's Pericles warned, one sin 'another doth provoke.' In light of the many social harms of homosexuality, many documented in our analysis of this Centers for Disease Control study, the coming U.S. Supreme Court should overturn Lawrence v Texas, which gave constitutional protection to homosexual conduct. "
Of course, there is no mention about how the research data was obtained. I mean, how did they know a gay man was driving the car? Was it the type of car he drives (a sissy Beetle as opposed to a manly SUV?) Did they survey police reports to find more women in jean jackets with short haircuts pulled over for DUI? What's the deal? Last time I looked there was no government agency (state or federal) asking someone is the were gay or lesbian.

These silly Christians, where do they get their information? Do you think God told them? Who did they survey?
25% of homosexuals as compared to 14% of straights said that they drove under the influence of drugs or alcohol last year. Gays were more apt to drive impaired than straight men - 32% to 19%, and lesbians than straight women - 17% to 8%.
If it was a survey, maybe the homosexuals were just more truthful than the straights, did they think about that? What was their survey group, 10 homosexuals and 1 straight man or 2 lesbians and one straight woman? Inquiring minds want to know!

Trying to do my best impression of Buddy from Kids in the Hall:
Driving under the influence, oh come on, I'm gay. When you're gay it doesn't matter what you do because you're GAY. Saved the Pentagon by helping take down the plane, who cares because he's gay. I heard on Iraqi TV there were showing insurgents who were beheading people, it was awful, however, the gay sex was worse! I mean THEY were GAY!

The recent deluge of Cameron distortions is because he paid to have a 48 page 'report' put in the pay-to-publish 'Psychological Reports' ($27.50 per page if you want to be a published researcher). The entire report is comprised of silly statistical distortions of the " NATIONAL HOUSEHOLD SURVEY ON DRUG ABUSE, 1996". This extensive study geared towards assesssing drug usage in the US. In 1996 they experimented with asking 18 non-core questions about sexual practices, mostly about condoms. One question, PB-10 asked about the gender of sexual partners in the previous 12 months of the 18 years and older participants.

Most of the survey is administered verbally by an interviewer, but people could opt on this part to fill out a form in their presence or have the questions verbally asked. This of course resulted in people being a bit less than truthful about their sexual histories. According to this study 23% of american adults were celibate in the previous year - a figure that is over twice as as high as other studies. Further 5% of the entire group either refused or left blank the question. Yes after that about 1.5% admitted to same-sex sexual partners but that just means the potential error is over 5 times the value of Cameron is using - the number of participants with same sex partners could easily be 7% or higher.

This is the reason this is the ONLY year that these sexual questions were asked, because the post study analysis made it obvious that you can't get accurate information about this subject using the study's interviewing technique. So what Cameron is doing is using a bogusly low same-sex value AND misrepresents it as being for 'gays'. (other studies have shown that most people who engage in same sex behavior do NOT consider themselves homosexual). After that is just a juvenile comparison of this artificially low value with other values for 'straight' people he can conjure up. He of course never points out that if he were to consider the study's range of error at the high levels gays come out looking like saints compared to the straights. Just a standard Cameron case of garbage in, garbage out statistically speaking.

A humorous aside is Cameron claims that getting his hands on this 'shocking' study was incredibly difficult and implies the government was trying to suppress it. Of course the entire study, as well as all the other years, are available on the web with a database that includes every single response by every single person in the study. My guess is that this claim has a two fold benefit - makes it all seem like secret information revealed, and rationalizes to his financial backers why he took all that money and produced a report that could be generated in a couple days.

Hope that helps put his 'study' in perspective.
