Hate Groups

The following is a listing of anti-gay groups identified by the Southern Poverty Law Center. I based this blog on the work SPLC does, watching the Hate Groups and reporting on their activities (Groups designated as hate groups by the Southern Poverty Law Center are marked with an asterisk):
Alliance Defense Fund
American Family Association
American Vision*
Chalcedon Foundation*
Christian Action Network
Concerned Women for America
Coral Ridge Ministries/Center for Reclaiming America
Family Research Council
Family Research Institute*
Focus on the Family
Summit Ministries
Traditional Values Coalition

For the record, Article 8 and Brian's Blog reference many of these organizations.

Don't forget the Catholic Action League of MA. Here's C.J. Doyle's partner in hate on the "Jacob Parker Incident":

Dear Lexington Cares,

I understand your campaign to incite little children to beat their classmates to a pulp for their father's refusal to have him subjected pagan immorality has just hit paydirt.

When the dust settles, Catholics would be happy to bring our toddlers up to the Lexington Green where they could be beaten in the public square for having parents who tell them that God gives us rules about sexuality. Please contact me and I would be happy to arrange a day. We could have the press come and really give traction to your efforts.

In fact, why don't you make the Lexington Green a Theme Park? That way, you could choose special days for special beatings. You can beat them up for our beliefs against pornography, heterosexual adultery, homosexuality, masturbation, stealing, fornication, murder. That makes seven, one for each day.

Please also add to your list of actively anti-gay orgs:
Roman Catholic Church
Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints (Mormons)
Southern Baptist Convention
Anglican Union (in part, including parts of Episcopal Church)
United Methodist Church
Presbyterian Church in America
---
am I forgetting any denominations that purport to bring a message of love?

Laurel,

Don't forget muslims, orthodox jews, buddhists, hindus and jehovah's witnesses. Who ISN'T anti-gay? Atheists and demonic worshipers?

Well, there are the Unitarian Universalists (link). Of course, a good chunk (substantial minority) of us UUs are atheists.

The other obvious citation (considerably more Christian than UUism) is the Metropolitan Community Churches (link). Not a lot of homophobia there.

FWIW, there are other liberal denominations (United Church of Christ, Reform Judaism, etc.) that can claim to deal with GLBT rights fairly well.

Substantially, though, I think you're right--nearly all organized religion has a terrible record when it comes to affirming the rights and humanity of sexual minorities.

Ben is trying to claim that hating gay people is mainstream. In fact, Jews, Buddhists, Episcopaleans, Paulists, UU, UCC, and Catholics who aren't blinded by hate all support gay people.

DO NOT FEED THE TROLLS.

I stand by my comment. "Mainstream" religion has an enormous amount to answer for, given its frequent denials of the inherent worth and dignity of LBGT people and those who love them.

If "Ben" really is a homophobe troll, he's just another case in point. (In that case, it appears he's an atheophobe as well.)

Hey Bud, did you notice that the bigots over at Massresistance removed their email address so once again they hide in the dark. On the radio show this weekend Amy did a "blog dance" by saying she may or may not be the person who writes the blog. She must think very highly of herself and that people lose sleep at night because of her nasty postings.

She also appears fasinated with breasts. First mannequins and now trangendered people's. What a kook.

Rieux,

Let me put it another way. No matter how you feel about organized religion, far more religions have prohibtions against MassResistance (i.e. bearing false witness and judging others lest you be judged) then have prohibitions against gay people. Amy Contrada and co. just *wish* it were different.

Here's a quote from Carole McKinley today:
This is hogwash.

Do understand the concept of teaching your children on the basis of their intellectual growth? This is what God does with us as a society. Face it, cave men were not ready for ipod technology. Nero fed the lions Christians and they killed firstborn children on a whim of a king. Societies are supposed to evolve towards God and away from pagan life styles, not towards them. You have been misled by people like Walter. You have a temptation - he's told you to give in to it. It's heresy. Period. I'd go as far to say that he is a complete apostate. I don't think he assents to any of the teachings of Christ's Church.

This is interesting. She says the church is always "evolving". What is wrong with these people?. On one hand she is fighting for the status quo and then when it suits her needs says that the church "evolves". Shallow

Don't forget that wacko Stephen Bennett.

Focus On The Family is the largest most powerful one and has since swallowed up the Family Reasearch folks.

They are coming back to boston and worcester this summer with their "truth" conference and a special love won out conference in worcester.
