What's an Ex-gay?

Massresistance is currently razing "Annie's Mailbox" (an advice column in the Boston Globe) for being "pro-gay" for advice it gave to a parent with a gay child. It seems the Massresistance "blog" would like to have had Annie suggest PFOX instead of the radicals at PFLAG (Parents, Friends of Lesbians and Gays who are the sweetest and kindest people you would ever meet).

PFOX, in case you didn't know, is the Parents and Friends of X-Gays. I think the name is funny. Why are they X-Gays? Is that like the X-Men or an X-husband/wife? If they have "recovered" from homosexuality, why aren't they called heterosexuals? I don't call myself an X-Straight (of course as far as I can remember I have always been gay).

I guess PFLAG's Vision statement is the reason why Massresistance thinks they are radical:

We, the parents, families and friends of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered persons, celebrate diversity and envision a society that embraces everyone, including those of diverse sexual orientations and gender identities. Only with respect, dignity and equality for all will we reach our full potential as human beings, individually and collectively. PFLAG welcomes the participation and support of all who share in, and hope to realize this vision.

Maybe I have something on the X-men analogy. Maybe they think of themselves as superheros now "Ready to target Homosexuality where ever it occurs, but we're not straight you know, we're the EX-GAYs!"

An interesting blog that watches these Ex-gay movements is Ex-Gay Watch. Check them out if your interested.

Note to Massresistance: Annie's Mailbox isn't pro-gay, they are pro-normal and you're a little late in your criticism. Other homophobes like you have already attacked "Dear Abby" for being "pro-gay", hmmm...sense a trend? They, like the Psychiatric Associations in the world know that being gay is NOT a mental illness. Likewise, trying to change your sexual orientation does more harm to the person than living the way you are born. The only harm that is caused to a person who is gay or lesbian is from people like YOU.
